Shanghai Stock Exchange

The foreign businessmen set up the Shanghai Stock Exchange in the year of 1891 when the mining shares were on its peak. It was then named as Shanghai Sharebrokers' Association and its headquarter was situated in Shanghai. Stock Exchange in Shanghai happens to be the first ever Stock Market in China. The association applied for registration in Hong Kong in the year of 1904. it was at this time that Shanghai Sharebrokers' Association came to be known as Shanghai Stock Exchange.

Initially the securities were coming from local companies as well as investors. In the earlier days of Shanghai Stock Exchange the private shares were mainly dominated by the local banks. There was an eventual amalgamation between the Shanghai Securities and Commodities Exchange and the Shanghai Chinese Merchant Exchange. This combined market commenced operating as the Shanghai Stock Exchange. Industrial shares overshadowed the shipping, docks and insurances after the Treaty of Shimonoseki in the year of 1895.

Gradually shanghai emerged as the financial as well as economic center of the far east.



It was by the fourth decade of the twentieth century. During this time both the Chinese as well as the foreign investors could conduct stock trades. They could also trade government bonds, debentures and futures. It was then one of the Major Stock Markets of the World. On 8th December in the year of 1941, Shanghai Stock Exchange came to a sudden halt as the Japanese soldiers took possession of the Shanghai International Settlement. Stock Exchange of Shanghai had a resumption of its operations in the year of 1946. three years later it had to be closed again due to the communist revolution that took place in the year of 1949. the securities market of China underwent a reform in the 1980s causing the development of the economy of the socialist market. Shanghai Stock Exchange was reestablished on the 26th November of the year of 1990. the operation began on 19th December in that very year.
